After explaining the ins and outs of the issues with keeping the show going, Darone thanks Jeremy Kalmanofsky and The Conservative Yeshiva for all of their help in making DDD a reality, and expresses his hope that perhaps the show could be revived in the future.

The reasons were primarily financial (but based on the fact that nobody has complained, it was probably a good idea.) However, although he no longer has an Apple Developer Account, he continues to get weekly analytics emails from Apple letting him know that the app has sold ZERO units.

Darone goes on to talk about how frustrating it is when unsubscribing doesn’t work.

Ten Commandments: The Album

In this episode of The JCast Journey, host Darone Ruskay talks about the new series of podcasts by the folks at RadioLab, in their series More Perfect in which the producers have found 27 musicians to record a song each on one of the 27 amendments to the United States Constitution. This concept got Darone to think about what it would look like to produce an album with ten songs, one on each of the ten commandments, or if we really wanted to be brave, a box set with 613 songs, one on each of the 613 mitzvot in the Torah.

With over 4,000 podcasts or blog posts on the Network, Darone knows something about posting on the internet, but he feels that the intention of the poster is vital. When JCast posts something we want to interact with our listener or reader, but we want to have constructive conversations, and when the results of the post are just to get people angry, that falls into the world of trolling, which is not what we believe creates positivity on the internet. Sometimes things go wrong, but Darone thinks that your intentions need to be pure.

A Bill From Apple

It is the bill he got for $100 in order for the JCast Network app to remain on the App Store. Why does Apple need to charge for an app that is given to people free? Darone asks. Google only charges $25 once, why does Apple need to charge every year. And, does anyone really even use our app? In this episode of The JCast Journey, host Darone Ruskay talks about the unfair action of many podcasters to “post-date” their episodes with the result of having only their shows appear (or rather prominently appear) on the Judaism iTunes Podcast page.

Rather then continue to complain to Apple and continue to ask them to only promote shows AFTER their official publication date (which would be easy for them to do I am sure) he has decided to make a statement by putting this episode up in all of the JCast Network feeds with a publication date of Jan 1, 2016 which will put it beyond any other show, and will thus list us first.

Is this fair? No! Is this right? No! Is anyone going get hurt? No, and maybe, just maybe the folks at Apple will take notice.

Binge Watching

In this episode of The JCast Journey, host Darone Ruskay talks about the concept of Binge Watching, the idea of watching an entire series, or a season of a series in a matter of days. Be it the Netflix show “House of Cards” or a tv show that you didn’t watch when it came out like Breaking Bad or Battlestar Galactica, Darone discusses this new phenomenon.

Darone mentions that while this has grown in the television sphere, he has not enjoyed it in the same way in the podcasting world. A number of his favorite shows (Coverville and The Daily Giz Wiz) have changed format to fewer, but longer episodes, which have actually made the shows less enjoyable for Darone.

While we have no plan on reducing our shows, Darone wants to know your opinion of our publishing a full week of The Daily Daf Differently at the start of the week rather then putting them out one day at a time. What do you think? We would love to hear your thoughts.

Darone talks about how he felt a bit like a torah scholar of old who read into texts from what was and what was not on the page, and assumed that the lack of “Shabbat Shalom” was a statement that Amichai was not feel particularly festive or hopeful as he prepared to enter Shabbos. Episode Twenty-Three: Smorgasbord

In this episode of The JCast Journey, host Darone Ruskay talks about his experience recently at a lecture and a conversation he had afterwards.

While sitting at the lecture he wondered where a lecture like that one, could fit into JCast Network. And then afterwards, he spoke with someone who wanted to blog on JCast Network, but didn’t feel like he could take on a solo blog, but would prefer a group blog.

After thinking about both experiences, Darone decided it was time to launch “Smorgasbord”. Smorgasbord will be a podcast of “one-offs” interesting lectures, conversations, essays, interviews… Things that are not ready for their own podcast (although they may become one over time) but are important and interesting, and should be shared with the larger community.

Darone discusses the way that Apple products, including the iPod, Macintosh and most importantly the iTunes Music store, made way for his new project JCast Network, and the gratitude that Darone feels for these innovations.
